VASS, N.C. — A woman and her daughter were injured Sunday after their car hit a horse in the roadway Sunday night outside of Vass.

Officials responded to the 2800 block of Cypress Church Road around 10:30 p.m.

At the scene, they found a dead horse blocking both lanes of the roadway and a car that had left the road and crashed into a tree in front of a house.

Officials said the car hit the horse before running off of the roadway and coming to a stop against the tree.

A 32-year-old woman and her 9-year-old daughter were transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials said a second passenger car hit the horse shortly after the first crash was reported. According to officials, the driver did not remain at the scene of the accident.

Cypress Church Road was closed to traffic in both directions until just after 11:30 p.m. while the accident was investigated and the horse was removed from the road.
