ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A 46-year-old Rocky Mount woman was arrested for allegedly beating and robbing a 60-year-old handicapped man in his home Friday night.

Police said a neighbor went to check on Haywood Warren Saturday morning and found him injured inside his Carolina Avenue home.

Warren had lacerations on his face and head, police said. He was treated at Nash General Hospital.

Warren told police that Mary Lawton had hit him with a metal object the previous night and then took his phone.

Police arrested Lawton on charges of common-law robbery and felony assault on a handicapped person. She was placed in the Nash County Jail under a $20,000 bond.

Lawton has a criminal record dating to 1982 and has served time for common-law robbery, prostitution, crimes against nature and drug offenses, according to state Department of Correction records.
