The Poe Center for Health Education is a popular spot for field trips that focus on health education. But, with schools closed to in-person instruction, that means field trips are canceled.

Now Poe is offering up some of its health education programs virtually, so students can take advantage of them at home.

The Youth Program Series starts Sept. 16 and runs through Nov. 4. Programs are at 3:30 p.m., Wednesdays, and take place via Zoom. They are $10 per person.

These programs are in addition to a Family Program Series, which the Poe Center has scheduled for the next several months and include upcoming sessions of both Girl Talk and Guy Talk this month.

Here's the September line-up for the Youth Program Series:

Puzzled by Puberty
Sept. 16, for fifth graders

Engage in an honest conversation regarding the physical, emotional, and social changes that occur during puberty. Discuss the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems, the menstrual cycle and fertilization. Interactive activities and an age appropriate movie reinforce important messages covered during the program.

Choices & Consequences
Sept. 23, for fifth graders

Students will learn the facts about inhalants, tobacco/e-cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana through an interactive classroom game modeled after the popular show, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Students will learn valuable information about the effects of substance use on their growing brains and bodies with interactive activities, videos and group discussion. Students will conclude the session with participation in an activity reinforcing the importance of refusal skills.

GermBusters
Sept. 30, for second and third graders

They’re everywhere, they’re everywhere! What are we talking about? GERMS! Whether it’s cold and flu season or just close quarters, germs can spread easily. Through this interactive experience, empower your students with the knowledge to reduce the transmission of these microscopic organisms.

More information, including details about how to register, are on Poe's website.
