WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Winston-Salem woman is spreading the word after a pedicure landed her in the hospital.

On Friday, Tracy Lynn Martinez took to Facebook and posted several photos of her leg, which became badly infected after her visit to a local salon on June 22.

I just wanted to share my story to save someone from going what I'm going through or even death," said Martinez.

According to Martinez, she started suffering from chills, nausea and vomiting the day after her pedicure. The following day, she said she was walking off balance and her leg was swollen.

An ambulance took Martinez to the emergency room, where doctors told her she had a serious case of cellulitis caused by a strep infection in her blood stream.

Martinez later confirmed that the infection came from a callus cutter, a tool used to remove rough skin from the heel that is not permitted in salons in North Carolina.

"There is no way to properly disinfect this tool to continually use on people," she wrote. On Friday, Martinez posted that she was still recovering after a two-week stay at the hospital.

"I will be on meds for the next three months and compression stockings on this leg for life protecting it from another infection," she wrote. "Yes, I'm only 35, and this is why I'm sharing my story."
