Cary, N.C. — A winning Mega Millions ticket worth $425 million was sold in New York.
Three tickets worth $10,000 were sold in North Carolina: one at a Quik Trip in Concord, one at a Circle K in Garner and one at Southeast Energy LLC in Burnsville.
The jackpot was the eighth largest in the game’s history, and it was only the fifth time a jackpot drawing has occurred on Jan. 1.
Before the drawing, North Carolina residents were thinking about what they would do if they were to become a multi-millionaire at the start of the new year.
“I’ve been wanting to do like a children’s hospital or just own one. I work with kids, so I really want to do that. That’s my passion,” Durham resident Crystal Daniels said.
“[I’d] find Gilligan’s Island, just disappear and drop off the map,” Cary resident Tom Imler said. “Do things for my family, do things for causes I believe in and just fade into the background.”
Luck and details matter for the New Year’s Day wish to come true.
“I would buy a house and then I would probably save the rest for [my daughter’s] college or something like that. And take a trip, several trips,” Daniels said.
