Triangle to have another bitterly cold night before warming trend starts

This year’s low was 33 degrees warmer, with temperatures hitting 24 degrees.

The cold will stick around for a couple of days longer, but a warming trend is about to kick in, WRAL meteorologist Kat Campbell said.

It’ll be another clear, cold night Tuesday, with overnight lows in the mid-20s.

“Clear skies are one of the ingredients we need for a cold night, in addition to that very dry air,” Campbell said.

Winds could gust up to 25 mph, and that could make it feel like 19 degrees outside, Campbell said.

But Wednesday will get warmer, with high temperatures reaching 46 degrees.

Thursday’s temperatures are expected to peak at 49 degrees, and we’ll break into the mid-50s on Friday.

A high-pressure system to our west is keeping skies clear while funneling in cold air from Canada.

But that system will move offshore, and rain chances return Friday.

“Friday is that transition day,” Campbell said. “It’s warmer, but it’s wetter.”

There’s a 40% chance for rain during the day Friday and a 70% chance of rain Friday night.

But Saturday and Sunday look dry, and temperatures will stay in the lower 50s.
