Wilson, N.C. — The mother of a Wilson baby found outside an America's Best Value Inn in critical condition on Friday morning says her child was taken from her as she slept.
"I was asleep when they came through the room and took my son from me," Domquie Sanders told WRAL News in an exclusive interview.
The child's father, Daryl Jay Barnes III, and his girlfriend, Keosha Tachelle Parker, were arrested Monday. Barnes is charged with felony child abuse; Parker is charged with felony child abuse and attempted first-degree murder after the child was left outside overnight in the cold.
Both were being held Tuesday at the Wilson County Detention Center.
Sanders called police Friday morning when she woke to find the child missing.
Police said Sanders and Barnes argued Thursday night at the America's Best Value Inn on U.S. Highway 301 in Wilson, where both were staying.
Sanders then went to bed with a friend and her son. She woke to find the child missing.
Security camera footage obtained exclusivley by WRAL shows Parker holding the child and walking around the hotel. At one point, she goes into a room through a broken window, stays in there for several minutes and then comes out and walks out of the camera's view.
The hotel's owner, Rohit Kumar, said Parker was not seen on the security footage again because where the baby was left was out of view.
"She's only been around my child like twice, so I never thought they would do anything like that," Sanders said of Parker. "It hurts, knowing that somebody would do that type of thing to somebody that they know."
The baby was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville and is expected to make a full recovery.
"He's good," Sanders said. "He's been up, laughing because my baby is playful. He likes to laugh and smile."
