WILSON, N.C. — The driver who police say crashed into a Hardee's on Aug. 14, resulting in the death of two brothers eating at the restaurant, was charged Tuesday more than a month after the crash.

According to the Wilson Police Department, Jesse Lee Lawrence, 78, from Wilson, was charged with one count of reckless driving and two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Police said Lawrence turned himself in on Tuesday and was given a $20,000 unsecured bond.

Police said Lawrence crashed an SUV into the restaurant on Sunday, Aug. 14, around 9:45 a.m., while people were eating breakfast inside. Christopher Ruffin, 58, was pronounced dead on scene while his 62-year-old brother, Clay Ruffin, was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

A witness said the driver of the SUV got out of the vehicle complaining that his brakes had failed.

The right side of the restaurant was gone after Lawrence’s vehicle went right through the front windows.

Lawrence was also taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Investigators haven't said what caused the crash. However, authorities said Lawrence wasn't impaired or having a medical emergency.

Wilson police are encouraging anyone with information regarding this case to call them at 252-399-2323 or call Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
