WILSON, N.C. — The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued a Silver Alert Tuesday for a 19-year-old Wilson man who wandered away from a mental health facility.

Matthew John Gardner left Le'chris Behavioral Health Services, at 2707 Wooten Blvd. in Wilson, around 1:30 p.m, authorities said. Wilson police said he suffers from several mental health problems.

Gardner is a white male with brown hair, hazel eyes and a blond spot in the front of his head. He is about 6-feet tall and 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, green shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Sgt. John Slaughter with the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2350.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
