— Wilson's Community Christian School is closed Tuesday and will close again on Wednesday due to a large number of illnesses reported among students and staff.

The Christian school made the announcement on social media on Monday.

"Because of the numerous staff and student sicknesses that have occurred recently, the school board, in conjunction with the board of directors, has made the decision to close school so that we can work to ensure a clean and healthy learning environment for everyone," the post read, citing "the health and well-being of our student body and staff."

Jan. 22 and Jan. 23 will be optional teacher workdays for all staff, according to the school. Winter sports team practices will be optional, and the school's daycare will remain open.

While the school did not specify what illness is causing the cancelation of classes, flu season is underway in North Carolina.

Two new deaths linked to the flu were reported by state health officials on Thursday, bringing the total so far this season to 22.

The school has students daycare age through twelth grade.
