WILSON — Though many of us are a long way from New York, there are some things you can do to help.

If you live in the Wilson area, you can make donations to local rescue workers, who plan to drive everything they collect to New York. Crews in Manhattan need dog food, blankets and flashlights. Some of the workers in Wilson have ties to New York, and friends they have not heard from since the attack.

"I used to be in those towers every morning to catch my train, and we knew some firemen there and they have not found them yet. We're hoping, still hoping, but, we wanted to do something because this hurt," MSGT Kim Hampton of the Wilson County Rescue Squad said.

Donations are being collected at the Wilson County rescue building on South Tarboro Streetany Wilson city fire station or the new emergency medical services building on Glendale Avenue.

Firefighters in Raleigh are gearing up for a fundraiser of their own.

It will be held Monday, at the Crabtree Valley Mall and the North Hills Mall. Fire engines and firefighters will be on hand to take donations for the New York Firefighters 911 Disaster Relief Fund.
