WILMINGTON, N.C. — A Wilmington man wanted for a January shooting and suspected in a 2009 slaying killed himself Friday after U.S. marshals tracked him to a hotel in Florida.

Wilmington police named Dwayne Timothy Moore, 25, as a suspect after his girlfriend, Kayla Leann Moore, was shot and her car stolen early Tuesday. Police issued an arrest warrant charging him with attempted murder.

Wilmington detectives tracked Moore to a hotel in Orlando, Fla., on Friday, then alerted fellow U.S. marshals to his presence. Marshals said that when SWAT officers approached his hotel room, Moore shot himself twice. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

New Hanover District Attorney Ben David told multiple media outlets that Moore had also been a suspect in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend Tiffany Dawkins in Pender County on Dec. 27, 2009. He was never charged in the death.

Moore was an absconder from probation and had amassed nearly 75 convictions since 2003, according to state Department of Correction records.

He had convictions for assault on a female, larceny of firearms, possession of a firearm by a minor, maintaining a dwelling place for a contraband substance and drug possession, as well as dozens of forgery, larceny and breaking-and-entering charges.
