WILMINGTON, N.C. — There are times when your cellphone rings during inconvenient moments.

It happened Thursday to Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo during a media briefing on the approach of Hurricane Florence.

Saffo initially screened the call, but when the number from Washington, D.C., popped up again, he knew something was up.

"It was the White House, and they said, ‘The president would like to speak with you,'" he said.

President Donald Trump called to offer support as Florence neared.

"He offered any kind of assistance at the federal level," Saffo said. "He understands this is a pretty significant event for our community."
