RALEIGH, N.C. — The wife of a man sentenced to life in prison spoke for the first time with WRAL News on Monday.

Alonzo Dargan Jr. was arrested in October of 2022 for killing his girlfriend, Akeila Ware, and her unborn child. At the time, and to this day, he is married to Briana Dargan, who said she is still trying to understand what happened to her family.

“I myself don’t know what happened on that day," said Briana Dargan. "I may never know.”

Dargan Jr. pleaded guilty to Ware's murder on Jan. 25 and was sentenced to life in prison Friday.

Briana Dargan said she and her husband built a happy life together with two children, which is why she is still puzzled about his affair with Ware and his actions.

"This is something our family has struggled with, and I don’t think we will ever make sense of it," Briana Dargan said.

While the Dargan family tries to make sense of it, Ware’s family is raising her five children.

"We are at a loss for words trying to explain this to the kids," said Twila Ware, Akeila Ware's mother, in October of 2021. "It is just senseless to take her life and an unborn baby's life."

Now, Ware's family is taking care of those left behind.

While Briana Dargan said she will continue to support her husband, she expressed condolences to the Ware family.
