CLAYTON, N.C. — The wife of a Clayton firefighter who was one of 17 at the Clayton Fire Department diagnosed with COVID-19 gave an update on her husband's condition on Wednesday and talked about what her family and others were going through.

Jason Dean, 42, has been with the Clayton Fire Department for 20 years. Kristy Dean said he loves his work and the people he works with. She said he developed pneumonia and is on a ventilator, so he is completely sedated. She and their two children have not spoken with Jason since last Saturday.

Nurses reported Wednesday "he is holding his own," Kristy Dean said.

"He was tested (last) Wednesday," Dean said. "By Friday, he started showing textbook systems of COVID, just extreme tiredness and head congestion, cough, fever. He just continued to get worse day by day."

Dean said the fire department was more than adequately prepared but had no way to avoid the situation that resulted in the outbreak.

"It is very serious, it's not to be taken lightly," Dean said. "Please do your part when you go out in public ... wear a mask."

Town of Clayton Public Information Officer Stacy Beard said over $4,000 has been given to the Clayton Firefighters Association's COVID-19 Fund. Image Builders of Clayton also offered to create T-shirts where 100% of the money for the first 100 sold will go to the fund.
