APEX, N.C. — The wife of a fallen U.S. soldier received the keys to a new home on Monday, part of an operation to help military vets and their spouses.

The keys to the home in Apex, located in the 1100 block of Russet Lane, were presented during an elaborate ceremony known as Hero Home Finale.

Army Staff Sgt. Jonathan Dozier was killed in January 2008 while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His wife Amy was officially given the keys to her new residence as a way of paying tribute to her husband.

"Never in a million years did I think this would be my life. Never," she said.

"Having this home means I get to move forward and do great things with this life that I’ve been so greatly afforded."

Group organizers said the house marked the 20th home built under the program.

Jonathan Dozier’s father, Carl Dozier, is also a veteran. It was an emotional day for him, too, from the missing man flyover to the music.

"It is inspiring because so many people that were out in the audience got to hear just a little bit of Jon’s story and to know his sacrifice," he said.

Dozier had relatives who fought in the Civil War, both World Wars and Desert Storm.

His wife serves as a mentor to and resource for other war widows.

Operation: Coming Home is a joint volunteer project by the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County and other local non-profit groups.
