98-year-old widow of fallen NC trooper asks thieves to bring husband's badge back
The NC Highway Patrol is asking the Cape Fear community to come together and help a 98-year-old widow find her husband's badge after it was reportedly stolen this week.

Trooper PW Smith was killed in the line of duty in 1948. According to NC DPS records, the patrolman drowned in Stanly County after the hood of his car came open and caused him to run off the road and flip into a water-filled ditch.
His wife has carried his badge in her wallet since his death. The wallet containing the badge was reportedly stolen in the Walmart in Leland.
Anyone that should find a badge with “Trp. P.W. Smith 5-27-48” engraved on it is asked to contact Sgt. Michael Baker at 919 733-5027 or the Wilmington Highway Patrol Office at 910-395-3917.
