RALEIGH, N.C. — A widening project on I-40/440 is causing inconveniences for overnight drivers this week.

Construction crews working on I-40 near 440 requires traffic closures at the junction.

The detour reroutes cars off exit 303 near Jones Sausage Road and forces them to turn around and take I-40 West to get to 440.

The good news is that detours are primarily happening overnight, so unless drivers are on the road at that time they likely won't have to deal with all of that traffic--just construction. Detours occur between midnight and 5 a.m. for the rest of the week.

According to the NCDOT, Raleigh's traffic will likely double in the next 20 years. This road widening project is meant to improve traffic flow and prevent issues down the line.

The entire project is scheduled to wrap up by 2022. The NCDOT said it will be a big improvement and should help make driving around Raleigh a little easier in the future.
