BURLINGTON, N.C. — A Caswell County animal preserve’s white tiger choked to death last week, the center said Friday.

The Conservators Center posted on its website that the tiger, Arthur, died March 28 while being fed pieces of boneless meat during a routine training session.

Staff members “attempted everything possible to save Arthur,” the center said, but could not revive him after he lost consciousness.

“Losing an animal is always painful, but Arthur was special, and the pain of losing him is particularly sharp,” the center said.

The tiger came to the center in 2008 as a malnourished 3-month-old after being seized by a government agency.

The lion, named Matthai, escaped its enclosure while a team was doing a routine cleaning, the Caswell County Sheriff's Office said.

Alex Black, an Indiana University graduate, died.

Attempts to tranquilize the lion failed, and it died after being shot eight times, according to a police report.
