Kepler 16b really has two suns like Star Wars' Tatooine

Monday May 4:

Happy Star Wars Day! May the "fourth" be with you. NASA discovered Kepler 16b, a Tatooine-like planet with two suns, in 2011. This cold, gaseous planet 200 light years from Earth is not thought to harbor life but like Luke Skywalker's home planet it orbits a binary star.

=Also, Mercury will disappear from view as its orbit takes it behind the Sun.

Tuesday May 5:

The Moon will be at perigee, its closest point to Earth tonight at 11:30 pm EDT. Look to the lower right of the Moon for the bright star Spica, nearly 250 light years away.

The Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower peaks Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning fed by debris left by Haley's Comet.

The waxing gibbous moon will make seeing faint meteors difficult however. Best viewing will when the Moon is low in the sky but before dawn between about 4:30 and 5:30 am local. If you are up, keep an eye out for meteors near Mars in the eastern sky, throughout the early part of the week, but I wouldn't set my alarm for this one.

A flock of SpaceX Starlink satellites will pass over beginning at 9:00 pm. Look to the northwest for a string tiny lights moving in a row toward the northeast over the next 6 minutes.

Wednesday May 6:

Another group will pass from the northwest to southwest beginning at 4:36 am from the west northwest, passing nearly overhead. These will be much further spaced and fewer in number because they are from a launch in February and have spread out to provide better coverage.  Starlink satellites are planned to provide broadband internet service globally.

Thursday May 7:

The Flower supermoon, the final of four consecutive supermoons and final of 2020. The best time to see it is shortly after sunset while the Moon is low on the horizon and looks even bigger. The next supermoon will be on March 28, 2021.

The Eta Lyrid Meteor Shower also peaks Thursday evening into Friday morning, fed by debris left by comet 1861 G1 Thatcher which last passed Earth in 1861. This one really isn't worth setting your alarm for. With only 10-20 meteors under the best conditions, the nearly full moon makes for the worst conditions.

The SpaceX launch originally scheduled for May 7 has been delayed for unspecified reasons. No new launch date has been announced.

Friday May 8:

Mercury begins emerging from behind the Sun, you might catch a glimpse lower on the northwester horizon about 30 minutes after sunset.

Looking ahead to next week:

Jupiter and Saturn will line up with the waning gibbous moon before it move under Mars later in the week.
