BUT WE HAVE ALSO HEARD IT COULD TAKE MORE THAN A YEAR TO GET MADE TO TALK TO US MORE ABOUT THIS PROCESS, WE ARE JOINED BY DR. TONY MOODY. HE IS A PHYSICIAN SCIENTIST WITH THE DUKE HUMAN VACCINE INSTITUTE, GOOD MORNING TO YOU, DR. MOODY. >> GOOD MORNING. >> FIRST OF ALL, IF YOU CAN JUST VERY SIMPLY HELP US UNDERSTAND, WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF MAKING A VACCINE? >> SURE, SO YOU START OUT WITH AN IDM, SOME SORT OF NOTION OF HOW YOU THINK THE VACCINE MIGHT PROTECT THE BODY, AND YOU DO INITIAL TESTING, USUALLY STARTING IN ANIMALS. THEN YOU GO THROUGH A PROCESS TO TEXT TEST VACCINE IN HUMANS. YOU START OUT BY SEEING IF IT IS SAFE AND HEALTHY VOLUNTEERS, THEN YOU GRADUALLY EXPAND THAT UNTIL YOU GET INTO LARGER AND LARGER GROUPS OF PEOPLE TO FIGURE OUT IF THE VACCINE ACTUALLY WORKS. >> AND HOW LONG DOES IT NORMALLY TAKE? I KNOW THAT IS A VERY DIFFICULT QUESTION, BECAUSE IT DEPENDS ON THE DISEASE, RIGHT? BUT CAN YOU GIVE US A BALLPARK? >> IT DEPENDS ON A LOT OF FACTORS. THE FIRST STEP, PHASE 1 STEP OF LOOKING AT INITIAL SAFETY USUALLY IS A PROCESS THAT ONLY TAKES A FEW MONTHS. THAN WHEN YOU STEP OUT AND DO IT IN A LARGER BODY OF PEOPLE, THAT TAKES A LITTLE BIT LONGER, BECAUSE IT IS HARDER TO GET A LARGER GROUP OF PEOPLE RECRUITED . WHEN YOU GO TO THE PHASE 3 STUDY, WHICH IS REALLY LOOKING AT, DOES THE VACCINE WORKS? THAT TAKES A LONGER TIME, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO VACCINATE ENOUGH PEOPLE, AND ALLOW THEM TIME TO BE EXPOSED TO THE INFECTION, TO TELL WHETHER OR NOT PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY PROTECTED. THAT PROCESS CAN TAKE NINE MONTHS, ONE YEAR, SOMETIMES LONGER. >> DR. MOODY, I WANTED YOU TO WEIGH IN ON SOME BREAKING NEWS THAT WE HAD IN JUST THE PAST HOUR. DR. FAUCI NOW SAYS THAT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT WE WILL GET A VACCINE BY JANUARY. THAT IS BIG. BUT ALSO, THIS ONE. OXFORD UNIVERSITY SAYS WE WILL SEE THE FIRST RESULTS FROM HUMAN TRIALS OF A VACCINE IN MID JUNE, WHEN I READ THAT THIS MORNING, I THOUGHT, HOW ARE THEY ABLE TO FAST-TRACK THAT? IS THAT SIGNIFICANT? WHAT YOU MAKE OF THAT? >> WELL, IT CERTAINLY IS. UNAWARE OF THE WORK BEING DONE OXFORD. THERE'S ALSO A LOT OF WORK BEING DONE HERE IN THE U.S. AND THE REALITY IS, WE GOT VACCINES INTO CLINICAL TRIALS MUCH FASTER THAN HAS EVER BEEN DONE FOR ANY NEW INFECTIOUS DISEASE. WITHIN 90 DAYS WE GOT VACCINES INTO A CLINICAL TRIAL. SO WE ARE EXPECTING SOME RESULTS THIS SUMMER FROM THE SAFETY STUDIES ARE BEING DONE. WHETHER OR NOT WE WILL BE ABLE TO SEE IF THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL IN PREVENTING DISEASES IS YET TO BE SEEN. SPIVAK THEY SAID THEY TRIED IT IN HUNDREDS OF HUMANS, PEOPLE. BUT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THIS THIRD PHASE, THAT IS THE PART THAT WOULD TAKE THE LONGEST. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THOSE TRIAL RESULTS IN THE FIRST PHASE ARE SUCCESSFUL? >> WELL, IT CERTAINLY DOES MATTER IF THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL. BECAUSE IF YOU SEE A SAFETY SIGNAL AND YOU SEE SOMETHING THAT SUGGESTS THERE IS A PROBLEM, YOU WOULD TAKE THAT VACCINE OUT OF CONSIDERATION. AND YOU MAY SEE A SIGNAL THAT IS REALLY REMARKABLE. YOU MAY SEE THAT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO GOT THE VACCINE WERE PROTECTED, AND THAT WOULD ALLOW YOU TO ADVANCE IT MUCH MORE QUICKLY. REALLY, TO BUILD UNDERSTAND, IS THIS VACCINE GOING TO WORK IN EVERYONE IN THE POPULATION? THAT IS GOING TO TAKE TIME, BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, VACCINE STUDIES INITIALLY ARE DONE AND PEOPLE WHO ARE YOUNG AND HEALTHY. AND WE NEED TO LOOK AT CHILDREN, WE NEED TO LOOK AT THE ELDERLY. WE NEED TO LOOK AT PEOPLE WITH PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS. THAT IS GOING TO TAKE SOME TIME. >> QUICK QUESTION FOR YOU, WE ONLY HAVE ABOUT 20 SECONDS LEFT. WHO GETS THE VACCINE FIRST? THERE ARE TRAVEL TRIALS HAPPENING IN GERMANY, UK, U.S., HOW WILL IT GET OUT TO THE WORLD? >> FIRST WE ARE GOING TO START ASKING VOLUNTEERS TO GET THE VACCINE. THEN IT'S REALLY GOING TO COME DOWN TO, HOW QUICKLY CAN A VACCINE MANUFACTURED, AND WHAT DO WE THINK THE BIGGEST BENEFIT IS GOING TO BE. THOUGH IT MAY BE HEALTHCARE WORKERS, MAYBE PEOPLE WHO ARE FIRST RESPONDERS. BUT THOSE ARE DECISIONS AT THE POLITICAL LEVEL. >> ALL RIGHT, GOT A BRACE FOR THAT, EVERY TIME. DR. I'm meteorologist, Amy Wilma in the WRL severe weather center, we had a dry warm day today, but a cold front is off to the west of us and it arrives tomorrow and brings the potential for some scattered showers and some thunderstorms. It's a pretty potent system today with a level three out of five risk for part of the Midwest. But the severe weather will be moving eastward as this cold front moves eastward as well. And we'll have the risk for severe storms tomorrow. Although the storm energy will not be as high tomorrow as it is today. There's a lot of storm energy west of us today and that's why they have that higher risk for severe storms. But as this system moves closer to North Carolina, it does weaken. We could still have some isolated severe storms but we have weak to moderate energy. We don't have the strong energy that they have west of us today. So it's a level one risk for most of us Friday. This is in the afternoon and evening. So isolated severe storms possible. The biggest threat will be some damaging winds and a potential for some hail as Well, the first half of the day is dry, so no rain worries for the morning commute. But by the time we get to the afternoon and evening, that's when we'll have scattered showers and storms and any of the storms that do form could become severe. And our highest rain chances are right during the evening commute. So about a 40% chance for rain tomorrow as we move ahead to Saturday, only a slim chance for a shower, a 20% chance for rain. But then a decent chance for rain on Sunday, we don't expect storms, but mainly the second half of our Sunday will have some scattered showers and it will be a cooler day. Here's a look at the rain over the weekend again, just a slim chance for rain on Saturday. Otherwise partly to mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in the low to mid seventies. Sunday morning looks mainly dry with a little bit of rain over some of our southern counties. But then as we head toward the afternoon, a better chance for rain, especially south and east of the triangle. And then during the evening is when some of that rain lifts to the north and includes a good part of the viewing area on Sunday. So the second half of the day certainly looks like the wettest part of the day, still warm Friday with a high of 84. And then we're down into the mid seventies Saturday, high temperatures will be in the low to mid sixties for Sunday and Monday with some chilly mornings, Monday morning and Tuesday morning. Down into the forties, we warm back up next week though. 74 on Tuesday, 78 Wednesday and near 70 for a high temperature on Thursday.
