CARY, N.C. — The Mega Millions jackpot continues to climb.
The jackpot now sits at an estimated $810 million for Tuesday night's drawing, which airs on WRAL News just before the 11 p.m. newscast. It's the third-largest amount in the history of the lottery.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot in the game's 20-year history is $1.5 billion.

The chances of winning though are 1 in 302 million.

“Any time players see a jackpot top that half billion-dollar threshold, they start dreaming about how their lives could change by winning it,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery. “We know it will be won eventually and we would love to see that win come from North Carolina.”

Nicholas Kapoor is a statistics professor who won $100,000 in a 2016 Powerball drawing. He said picking your favorite numbers is his favorite strategy.

"The strategy is to pick your favorite numbers. The strategy is just to take whatever numbers strike you," said Kapoor.

Hoping to crack the jackpot, customers in Cary already have their sights on how they’d spend the earnings.

"Help family first thing," said Chanel Ratliff. "I would probably go hide, but also give back to the community as well."

While no one won the jackpot, more than 40,000 winning tickets were sold in Friday’s drawing, according to the N.C. Education Lottery. One winning ticket worth $10,000 was purchased on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington.

You can watch Tuesday's drawing live on WRAL News at 11 p.m.
