Weldon woman killed in hit-and-run
Two women were struck by a hit-and-run driver Thursday evening as they tried to cross N.C. Highway 1651, just outside Weldon in Halifax County, deputies said Saturday.
Posted — UpdatedTomekia Richardson, 25, of Weldon, was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where she died. Natasha Pitchford, 22, of Roanoke Rapids, was treated at Halifax Regional Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Deputies said Jonathan Wilson, 17, of Halifax, was traveling north on the highway around 5:30 p.m., swerved to miss a bicycle and hit the women. He fled the scene because he was afraid, authorities said, but was arrested later.
Charges are pending, deputies said.
