CARY, N.C. — Add Wrexham AFC to the list of teams competing in Cary this summer.
Wrexham, the oldest club in Welsh football history, and the third oldest football club in the world, popped into the consciousness of American fans when actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the team and documented the challenges they faced as first-time owners in a TV series.

The club joins a roster that includes Clint Dempsey’s Team Dempsey and a team of former United States Women’s National Team players organized by Heather O’Reilly in a tournament to be played at WakeMed Soccer Park June 1 through 4.

The competition will feature 32 teams playing 7-on-7 soccer in a winner-take-all format with a top prize of $1 million. The format of The Tournament (yes, that's the official name) will mirror that of the World Cup, with group play, a knockout round followed by quarterfinals, semifinals and a championship on June 4.

Tickets are not yet available for sale, but fans can sign up for the waitlist to be notified when they are.
