Wegmans cancels proposed store near Cary Towne Blvd.

The Wegmans store that was expected to be built across from Cary Towne Center will not be moving forward.

Wegmans shared with WRAL on March 8, "We entered into an agreement for our Cary Store over four years ago. Since then, we’ve opened stores in Raleigh, West Cary, and Chapel Hill, and will be opening another store in Wake Forest this spring. Online shopping has grown tremendously, fueled in part by COVID-19, enabling us to serve customers in a much greater radius than was originally projected. This has allowed us to plan our growth differently than we have in the past. As a result, we have decided not to move forward with the proposed Cary, NC location."

At this time, there is no word on what may be replacing the Wegmans site in the Fenton Development scheduled to begin opening in April 2022.

The Hines real estate investment and development team provided the following statement to WRAL when asked about the loss of the grocer and any possible replacements:

"Given the immense interest in Fenton, where 80% of our retail space already is pre-leased, we are confident in completing the already strong mix of shopping, dining, entertainment and residential options. Fenton’s exciting “Live, Work, Play” environment – combined with the recent news of Epic Games locating its headquarters across the street – is attracting significant interest from prospective tenants, including grocers. Last year, we were able to quickly identify and replace our first anchor tenant, a movie theater, with a stronger operator, Paragon Theaters, despite the impact the pandemic had on the theater business. We expect to do the same for the grocery component of this project."

The newest Wegmans in the Triangle opened in Chapel Hill on Feb. 24, 2021 at 1810 Fordham Blvd.

The next Wegmans to open will be in Wake Forest, NC in May or June 2021. It is located at 11051 Ligon Mill Road in Wake Forest.

A new location in Holly Springs on North Carolina Highway 55 and Ralph Stephens Road is also on the list of future sites, although an opening date has not yet been shared.
