RALEIGH, N.C. — With dozens of businesses looking to fill hundreds of positions, WRAL's upcoming career fair in Raleigh highlights how different the job economy is this year than it was in 2009.

A decade makes a huge difference, hiring experts say. By the end of 2009, North Carolina's unemployment rate was around 11 percent. Now, it's around 4 percent.

On Thursday, the annual WRAL Capital Area Career Expo at the McKimmon Center near North Carolina State University could help hundreds find work -- and job seekers have a big advantage this year.

Wegmans is filling 500 positions at their new Raleigh store alone and, like many businesses, they are hungry for help. That's a different story from WRAL's first career expo, which took place in 2009 when the Great Recession swept away jobs, leaving many people desperate for work.

"The demand is there for sure," said Chip Wood with the N.C. Works Career Center. "We get phone calls every day from employers who are screaming for help."

Ninety employers are registered for Thursday's expo -- and they all have open positions and are ready to hire.

"If you're underemployed or just looking for a change, now's a great time ot act on that," Wood explained.

Wegmans will be one of the employers at the expo.

In about two months, the doors will open at the new Wake Forest Road location, but the hiring center on Glenwood Avenue has been operating for months.

"We are looking for great people who value being around other people, who like to have fun with what they do and who love food," said Hallie Johnston from Wegmans, adding that the store has big plans and big opportunities.

"We have five other stores coming," Johnston said. "We have a lot of hiring to do."

The free WRAL Capital Area Career Expo is Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the McKimmon Center at 1101 Gorman Street.
