RALEIGH, N.C. — The effort to revamp the western side of Hillsborough Street in Raleigh is moving to a new stage, and workers are scheduled to close a section of the road this weekend.

The work for this phase of the Hillsborough Street Renewal Project includes:

  • Removing four traffic signals from Brooks Avenue to Shepherd Street. That work will accommodate the installation of new roundabouts at Shepherd and Rosemary streets and at Dixie Trail and Friendly Drive and at Brooks Avenue.
  • Road crews are expected to move into the middle of the street to begin building the medians and roundabout structures. That means traffic will shift to the outside lanes during the construction phase.

This new traffic pattern may confuse motorists so drivers were urged to slow down and pay close attention to traffic signs.

Because the area where the road work is occurring is in the vicinity of NC State, drivers should be cautious of pedestrians and cyclists.

The effort to revamp Hillsborough in western Raleigh began in 2016 and is part of an effort to transform the street into a two-lane road with raised medians, enhanced sidewalks and marked bike lanes.
