Lots to do this weekend from the Got to Be NC Festival to Durham's Bimbe Cultural Arts Festival to the Butterfly Bash. Even an idea for date night if that's in the cards.

Lots going on as usual starting with ...

The third annual Got to Be NC Festival takes over the State Fairgrounds starting Friday. This smaller version of the State Fair includes carnival rides, games, activities for kids, live entertainment, food and a lot more. The Food and Wine Expo features tons of free samples of North Carolina products, plus there's the "water wars" water balloon launching activity next to Dorton Arena, which will be really popular if it's hot. I'd go Friday to avoid the crowds. The rides will open at noon that day. Admission and parking is free. Check my earlier post for a lot more details.
Also at the Fairgrounds is the WRAL Wellness Weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. They're letting me hang out in the WRAL booth from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. And Faye Prosser, the WRAL Smart Shopper, will be there on Sunday. Lots of free activities and health information.
Beanie + Cecil Baby in Raleigh will hold a special event from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at its store in Seaboard Station near downtown Raleigh. Wine, appetizers, juice and cookies plus a face painter will be there. See my earlier post for more. The party is scheduled just before the very popular and family-friendly Music on the Porch series at Seaboard, which starts around 6 p.m.
Applause! Cary Youth Theatre will present "Ramona Quimby," based on books by Beverly Cleary, Thursday through Saturday. Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Sertoma Amphitheatre at Bond Park, 801 High House Road. Advance price tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students/seniors and $5 for children age 5 & under. All tickets at the door are $10. Tickets are available at the Herbert C. Young Community Center Box Office from noon to 6 p.m. weekdays, or through Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000 or www.ticketmaster.com. For more, visit Applause! Cary Youth Theatre or call (919) 469-4061.
North Raleigh Arts & Creative Theatre presents "Charlotte's Web" with performances at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. The community theater at 7713-51 Lead Mine Rd. is presenting a new musical version of the classic.
The 41st annual Bimbe Cultural Arts Festival will spread out across downtown Durham from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday. Lots of music, dancing and art plus a Bimbe Kids Zone with dance, drumming, games, stories, and crafts.
The Museum of Life and Science in Durham will hold its annual Butterfly Bash from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Most activities are free with admission to the museum. The bash, one of the museum's most popular events, features insect tasting, crafts and live performances. Some activities do require registration. Check the schedule before you go.
The Carolina Ballet performs Sleeping Beauty Thursday through Sunday at the Progress Energy Center for Performing Arts in Raleigh. Tickets start at $20. And there are lots of other family-friendly shows coming up for toddlers to teens. Check out my earlier post for details on Sleeping Beauty and the other events.
If it's a date night this Saturday, you might consider Band Together NC's concert to benefit StepUP Ministry from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. in front of the Lincoln Theatre in downtown Raleigh. Band Together formed in 2001 when some friends got together to figure out how they could help in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. They've since raised money for a variety of charities. Saturday's concert helps to support Raleigh-based StepUp Ministry, an interfaith community that helps people become self-sufficient and has made a big difference in the lives of local kids and families. The concert features a variety of bands and includes Anoop Desai of American Idol fame. Tickets are $22 in advance, $25 at the door. For those age 21 and up only.
And WakeMed celebrates the grand opening of its new Children's Hospital from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Here's more about the event and more about the hospital.
