Weekend best bets: Fest in the West, Ben Folds and hot air balloons

— It's the first weekend in November and there is plenty of fall fun ahead!

Fest in the West (USA Baseball National Training Complex , 200 Brooks Park Lane, Cary) - This event in Cary features an arts and crafts market, two stages of live entertainment, a children's section, a beer garden and food truck rodeo. Admission is free. Fest in the West is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hot air balloon festival planned this weekend in Efland - The festival, which will include hot air balloon flights and tethered rides, will happen Friday through Sunday at the Barn at Lloyd's Dairy on an 800 acre farm near where Interstates 40 and 85 merge.

79th Annual NC Gourd Arts and Crafts Festival (NC State Fairgrounds - Holshouser Building, 1025 Blue Ridge Rd, Raleigh) - This festival features gourd workshops, gourd displays and vendors of gourd seeds, crafts, art, books, T-shirts, crafting supplies, and gourds! It is happening Saturday and Sunday at the fairgrounds' Holshouser Building.

Old North State Storytelling Festival 2021 (The Cary Theater, 122 E Chatham Street, Cary) - This two-day festival offers four showcases of live storytelling. Guests can view in-person, online or both. There will be national and regional storytellers, plus a special Saturday morning children's showcase. For in-person attendance, proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required and masks must be worn regardless of vaccination status.

Music and Comedy

Ben Folds: In Actual Person Live for Real Tour (Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, 2 E. South St., Raleigh) - Ben Folds is performing live at Memorial Auditorium on Saturday. He's calling these solo piano and orchestra shows his "In Actual Person Live for Real Tour." Proof of COVID vaccination is required to attend this show.

Ron White (Durham Performing Arts Center, 123 Vivian St., Durham) - Comedian Ron "Tater Salad" White first rose to fame as the cigar-smoking, scotch-drinking funnyman from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. He has since become an actor and a Grammy-nominated comedian. See him on stage at DPAC Sunday night.

Heather McMahan (Durham Performing Arts Center, 123 Vivian St., Durham) - This podcast host and comedian has co-hosted the fourth hour of "The Today Show." See her on stage at DPAC Friday night.

The Firebird - North Carolina Symphony (Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Meymandi Concert Hall, 2 E. South St., Raleigh) - You have two chances to enjoy The North Carolina Symphony this weekend. Shows are Friday and Saturday nights at Meymandi Concert Hall.

Straight No Chaser (Durham Performing Arts Center, 123 Vivian St., Durham) - Chart-topping a cappella group Straight No Chaser will play Durham Performing Arts Center Saturday night.

Family fun

Cinema in the Square (Moore Square, 226 E Martin Street, Raleigh) - Every Friday in October enjoy movie-musical fun in Moore Square. There will be pre-show entertainment on theme with each movie before a full-length screening outside under the stars. The series is free and open to the public and food will be available for purchase on-site. This week's movie is "The Greatest Showman." Pre-show fun starts at 6 p.m. with the movie at 7 p.m.

Downtown Apex Autumn Adventure (Historic Downtown Apex, N Salem St & Center St, Apex) - Register you team to find clues posted on participating storefront windows throughout Salem Street, solve the riddles, and submit your answers online for a chance to win some great prizes from local vendors.

Magic & Mischief, A Wizard's Market (Fred Fletcher Park, 880 Washington Street, Raleigh) - This Harry Potter-themed market will be held on Saturday afternoon at Fred Fletcher Park. There will be vendors, family-friendly stage performances and more fun from 2 to 7 p.m. Tickets are free but registration is required.

Skywatching (Dix Park, Raleigh) - Enjoy some stargazing Saturday night at the Big Field at Dix Park. Look through telescopes, facilitated by Morehead staff and dedicated volunteers, at a variety of objects in the sky including Jupiter and Saturn. This event is free to attend.

Saturday in the Park - Concert & PopUP Market (Knightdale Station Park, 810 First Avenue, Knightdale) - Nana's Sweet Treats and the Town of Knightdale will host this event Saturday with a pop-up market, concert, food trucks and a soccer game. The event runs from noon to 4 p.m.

More events

City of Oaks Marathon (City of Oaks marathon, 400 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh) - This 15th annual marathon will be held Sunday in downtown Raleigh. The marathon, half-marathon, marathon-relay and 10K start at 7 a.m., followed by the 5K at 7:20 a.m. The races will start at 400 Glenwood Ave. and end at Smoky Hollow, 500 N. West St.

5th Annual, Day of the Dead (City of Raleigh Museum, 220 Fayetteville Street, Raleigh) - Artist Studio Project and Friends of the City of Raleigh Museum will hold this event on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the museum. They will be unveiling the 5th Annual Day of The Dead Altar, "voces" or voices, dedicated to both women and those lost to the pandemic.

Monster Drawing Rally at the Market (North Carolina Museum of Art, 2110 Blue Ridge Rd., Raleigh) - Watch art being created in front of your eyes this weekend. The North Carolina Museum of Art will hold this event on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can watch eight artists create works of art in the museum plaza and even get bid on their works.

5th Annual Alley Cats & Ales (Raleigh Brewing Company, 3709 Neil Street, Raleigh) - This event on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at Raleigh Brewing Company will raise money for the Alley Cats and Angels medical fund which is used for acute and chronic health issues as well as routine medical care. There will be food trucks, beer and live music.

Buskers' Day (North Carolina Museum of Art Park, 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh) - The NCMA welcomes select buskers from across the state to play music throughout the Museum Park on Saturday afternoon. While busking takes many forms, this event is centered around music performances.

Dram Raleigh Anniversary Party (Dram & Draught , 623 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh) - Dram & Draught on Saturday from noon to 2 a.m. for their fifth anniversary party. There will be drink specials, swag and live music.

Shop for Good Pop-Up Shop (The Loading Dock, 1053 E Whitaker Mill Rd, Raleigh) - This pop-up event at The Loading Dock on Friday night will help raise money for a local nonprofit that empowers survivors of sexual violence to safely and anonymously share their stories. There will be 12 unique local artists to shop from.
