Weekend best bets: Barktoberfest, State Fair and zombies

We have some ideas for fun this weekend including a zombie movie festival, some pet-friendly events and more!

RALEIGH, N.C. — We have some ideas for fall fun this weekend, but first make sure to vote for your favorites in this year's WRAL Voters' Choice Awards! The top five finalists have been announced and you have until Nov. 21 to submit your picks.

Halloween-themed fun

6th Annual Zombiepalooza (The Cary Theater, 122 E Chatham Street, Cary) - The 6th annual Zombiepalooza, Cary's locally produced zombie-themed short film screening celebration, will be held Friday starting at 7 p.m. at Cary Theatre. Hand sanitizer is this year's required attraction, so keep your eyes peeled for at least one visible in every film. The annual costume competition will take place as well, so come dressed in your favorite Halloween costume. Admission is free.
Raleigh's First Haunted Car Wash (Splash Car Wash, 8012 Fayetteville Road, Raleigh) - Splash Car Wash, located at Ten-Ten Road and Highway 401 is presenting its first ever Haunted Car Wash, named the Night of Nightmares. This intense haunted house will be outside of your car as you drive through the car wash. It runs Friday through Sunday and again Oct. 29 and 30. Admission is $20 per car and $10 for fast pass members.
Adult Halloween Party and Comedy Show (Fortnight Brewing Company, 1006 Southwest Maynard Road, Cary) - Fortnight Brewing in Cary will host this adults-only Halloween party, comedy show and costume contest Saturday night.

Outdoor block parties

Festifall Arts Market & More (Downtown Chapel Hill, East & West Franklin St, Chapel Hill) - This annual celebration will take place as pop-up block parties at three different locations in downtown Chapel Hill this October. The second event is Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at 140 West Plaza. It is a twilight street market featuring arts and craft vendors, music, performances and more.

The Streetery (Geer and Foster Streets, 400 Foster Street, Durham) - Head to Geer and Foster streets for this outdoor event on Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. Some streets will be blocked off so you can dine outdoors and enjoy music from local artists.

Fall fun with pets

Barktoberfest (The Pavilion at Durham Central Park, 501 Foster St, Durham) - Durham Parks and Recreation and Beyond Fences are joining forces to provide this fun-filled afternoon featuring a dog costume contest, games, a beer garden, pet-friendly organizations and vendors, food vendors and more at Durham Central Park on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.
Pups & Pints in the Park (Waverly Place , 307 Colonades Way, Cary) - Head to Waverly Place on Saturday for this event that will include adoptable pets from Second Chance Pet Adoptions. From 1 to 4 p.m., enjoy beer from Bombshell Beer Company and live music. There will also be a pet costume contest. All proceeds from the event will benefit Second Chance Pet Adoptions.

Movies, comedy and music

Cinema in the Square (Moore Square, 226 E Martin Street, Raleigh) - Every Friday in October enjoy movie-musical fun in Moore Square. There will be pre-show entertainment on theme with each movie before a full-length screening outside under the stars. The series is free and open to the public and food will be available for purchase on-site. This week's movie is "Pitch Perfect." Pre-show fun starts at 6 p.m. with the movie at 7 p.m.

Band Together and United Way present Comeback Fest 2021 (Red Hat Amphitheater, 500 S. McDowell St., Raleigh) - Band Together and United Way present Comeback Fest 2021 featuring Khruangbin with special guests, Lee Fields and the Expressions, and Big Daddy Kane at Red Hat Ampitheatre in downtown Raleigh on Saturday. The venue requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test within 48 hours of the show. For those who do not have either a rapid test station outside the venue provided by Mako Medical. The onsite rapid tests will cost $20 to receive. Masks are not required but encouraged.

Tootsie (Durham Performing Arts Center, 123 Vivian St., Durham) - This laugh-out-loud love letter to the theater tells the story of Michael Dorsey, a talented but difficult actor who struggles to find work until one show-stopping act of desperation lands him the role of a lifetime. See it on stage at DPAC through Sunday. At this event, guests age 12 and older are required to provide documentation of full COVID-19 vaccination status or as an alternative, a recent negative COVID-19 test. Face covers will also be required for this event per the City of Durham and Durham County face cover requirement.

LIFE Skills Foundation Blues & Brews Benefit Concert (Historic Durham Athletic Park (The DAP), 500 West Corporation Street, Durham) - Help fight youth homelessness by joining LIFE Skills Foundation virtually or in-person at the Historic Durham Athletic Park for their Second Annual Blues & Brews fundraiser Friday night. The event will include great food and brews (options are available for those attending in person and those joining from home) and music by Pat "Mother Blues" Cohen and Jeffrey Scott.

Knotfest Roadshow: Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, Fever 333, Code Orange (Coastal Credit Union Music Park (formerly Walnut Creek Amphitheatre), 3801 Rock Quarry Rd., Raleigh) - Knotfest will stop at the Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek in Raleigh on Friday night. Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, Fever 333 and Code Orange will perform. The venue requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test. Masks are not required but encouraged.

Family fun

Bubble Palooza (Unity of the Triangle , 5570 Munford Rd, Raleigh) - Unitty of the Triangle church hosts this event on Saturday. It will feature morning and afternoon sessions with a bubble magic show and other bubble fun for all ages. There will be a bagged lunch, kid Zumba and dancing. Registration is required.

Cary Town Band: "It's Dr. Seuss" (Cary Arts Center , 316 N. Academy St., Cary) - Cary Town Band will be performing "It's Dr. Seuss" at Cary Arts Center Theatre on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Masks are required indoors for everyone, regardless of vaccination status. Proof of vaccination is not required to attend the event.
