RALEIGH, N.C. — Once again, voters' identities took center stage Wednesday as the House approved voter ID rules after several hours of impassioned debate.

The measure now heads back to the Senate, which could balk at some of the changes the House made.

House Republican leaders acknowledged during the floor debate the embarrassment caused by suspicious patterns of absentee voting in the 9th Congressional District, and some Democrats in Congress said they might not seat Republican Mark Harris, who initially appeared to have won that race, until questions over the election are resolved.

The State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement already is investigating the matter, and congressional Democrats say they want to conduct their own investigation.

Also on the House floor, an effort to split the Fairview Fire District from other fire districts in Wake County so that a fire station could be spared from closure failed in a 52-52 vote.

And if you really can't get enough from lawmakers, Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger said the session likely won't end until late next week. So you've got that to look forward to.
