Wednesday Wrap: It's reg reform time

RALEIGH, N.C. — You know you're getting late into the legislative session when the annual regulatory reform bill pops up, as it did Wednesday.

This year's effort is minor in comparison to years past, but it does bring out the old chestnut of ending the ban dumping on computers, televisions and other electronics into landfills. Other provisions could extend the life of old landfills, eliminate a water fountain requirement for some businesses and help Charlotte Motor Speedway with an old landfill of its own.

Speaking of old chestnuts, the effort to legalize fantasy sports betting in North Carolina actually cleared a House committee this year after going down in flames each of the past two years. The push comes in a measure that would create a state gaming commission to regulate fantasy sports, along with the state lottery, professional boxing matches and bingo games.

Meanwhile, a possible House vote on overriding Gov. Roy Cooper's veto of an abortion bill was pulled off the floor calendar for the eighth time in three weeks and rescheduled for next Wednesday.
