Wednesday Wrap: Congressional map, Dorian recovery funding
It's the middle of November, and lawmakers are still plowing through some major issues.
Posted — UpdatedA new map for the state's 13 U.S. House districts remains up in the air after a state court ruled that the current district map cannot be used in next year's elections because it is too partisan. Lawmakers have drawn 18 possible maps, but they haven't agreed on a plan, and most people who spoke during a public hearing on Wednesday disliked how the whole process has been handled.
Lawmakers also still need to pass legislation to assist with Hurricane Dorian recovery. The House and the Senate seem to have agreed to a $230 million package after the House initially wanted to provide more funding, and the Senate wanted only what was needed to access federal disaster recovery funds.
There's also discussion about yet another "mini-budget" to help keep Medicaid's shift to a managed care program on schedule. Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed money for the move in August as part of the ongoing budget impasse, but Department of Health and Human Services officials say the state likely won't be able to make the switch in February, as planned, without some funding soon.
