Good morning. I'm meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. We are looking at another intensely hot today. Tomorrow will feel very similar, but then we're going to start a transition into much cooler temperatures but a much wetter weather pattern. But another heat advisory for us today from noon to eight o'clock, we have a few isolated storms in the forecast today. That chance goes up a little bit tomorrow, but it really goes up starting Thursday. And, uh, that will help to bring us some cooler temperatures too, but nothing cool about today. Yesterday, we hit 101 will likely hit 100 again today. It'll feel like up to 110. The orange shaded area is, uh, our heat advisory for us today. Um, and as you're heading out, the door, temperatures are going to be in the mid to upper seventies and we're going to see that heat index climbing rather quickly. Our high temperature this afternoon 100. Today's record is 101. So we'll be close too, but we may not quite hit it 101 Durham 103 in Fayetteville. So we'll be awfully close to it. Our heat index forecast for it today. Feeling like 107 in Durham and South Hill, 106 in Raleigh, 110 in Fayetteville and Goldsboro, 109 in Clinton. So that's what it'll feel like this afternoon. And in terms of 100 degree heat, we don't often see a lot of days in the triple digits, but you wouldn't know that by this year we've seen nine so far, the record is 12 back in 1999. So we're on track for that record or at least close to it today. And tomorrow we continue to have an extreme heat risk, but that really begins to drop off, especially into Friday and Saturday, our highs dropped back into the eighties and it's been since May to early June, since we've had four days in a row below 90 degrees. And, you know, as hot as it's been, it's actually where we're headed. You can see the yellow color contours, that's where temperatures are above normal and watch how that shifts all, uh, from, uh, the middle of the country to the east coast over the weekend, temperatures back down below normal. Our normal high is 91. So we're well above normal today and tomorrow normal Thursday and then cooler Friday and Saturday. If you remember last week when we had all that rain, we had a high of 80 degrees and then the temperatures bounced right back up. That's not likely to be the case this time, we'll likely actually see those 80 degree temperatures well into early next week. The next thing headed our way is, of course, it's going to bring us the cooler temperatures is that front that's producing storms across parts of the Midwest. We have a trough of low pressure, just a weak boundary. It's going to bring us a small chance for some scattered thunderstorms this afternoon, but that chance does go up somewhat tomorrow. The northern part of the viewing area including the triangle has a level one risk of severe storms for tomorrow. So we're about to make that transition from hot and fairly dry to much wetter and much cooler on Thursday. And then it settles in through early next week.

And come November. I plan on being the first black governor of North Carolina, but I am not one of the political elite. I grew up poor as the ninth of 10 kids in Greensboro with an alcoholic father who beat my mother. I love to tell you that I graduated from high school found success. Never worried about money again, but I can't. I lost two jobs, two manufacturing jobs because of NAFTA which by the way, Joe Biden voted for politicians in DC. Made bad decisions and people like me suffered. I lost my car in my house. I was desperate. But you know, my story isn't unique. A couple of months ago in my travels, I stopped at a gas station as I was leaving a man walked out with a beard and he looked very stressed. He got in his car and I could see him holding an envelope, my heart dropped because years ago I held one just like it. It was bankruptcy papers. I could see the fear on his face and it took me back to lying awake at night with that non worrying debating which bills weren't going to get paid. Unfortunately. Many families today are having that same experience under Joe Biden, grocery prices have skyrocketed and gas has nearly doubled in North Carolina factories just like the one I worked at are closing, leaving families feeling hopeless but there is hope and I'm proof my wife and I never gave up. We kept our faith. We worked hard and made it through those tough times. Now, I stand before you on the verge of becoming the first black governor of North Carolina as governor. I will not forget where I came from or the struggles of the people I meet. And you know, there's someone else who will fight just as hard for you. AND THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS, THE APPOINTMENTS CLAUSE REQUIRES, IN THE CONSTITUTION, THAT SOMEONE LIKE JACK SMITH, ACCORDING TO THE COURT, BE APPOINTED BY THE DOJ, OR BY THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH, BUT IT MUST BE CONFIRMED BY THE SENATE. AND SO THE ARGUMENT THERE IS THAT THIS VIOLATES THAT PORTION OF THE CONSTITUTION BECAUSE JACK SMITH WAS NOT APPOINTED THROUGH THIS PROCEDURE AND THE JUDGE ESSENTIALLY SAYS, THERE'S A WAY TO DO THIS. YOU CAN APPOINT JACK SMITH THE WAY ALL U.S. ATTORNEYS ARE APPOINTED. &gt;&gt; DANNY, THE SPECIAL COUNSEL, IF HE WANTS TO, COULD TRY TO APPEAL THIS RULING NOW TO THE 11th CIRCUIT, THE FEDERAL APPEALS COURT, BUT GIVEN HOW THINGS ARE GOING, GIVEN THE TIMING ISSUES, THIS, OF COURSE, HAS NO HOPE OF ANY RESOLUTION BEFORE THE ELECTION. &gt;&gt; IT HAD LITTLE HOPE OF GETTING TO TRIAL BEFORE THE ELECTION, NOW IT HAS ZERO CHANCE BECAUSE THE -- WHOEVER APPEALS, OBVIOUSLY THE JACK SMITH TEAM WILL APPEAL AND YES, IT WILL GO UP TO THE CIRCUIT COURT. AS A RESULT, AT LEAST TANGENTIALLY OF THIS DECISION, EVEN THOUGH THIS DECISION HAS NO PRECEDENT THERE, NO CONTROLLING VALUE OVER JUDGE CHUTKAN IN D.C. NBC Special Report: Judge dismissed Trump classified docs case

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson hosts a news conference outside City Hall to share information about public safety before the Republican National Convention begins. He will also comment on political matters, including issues likely to arise during convention activities.

And I have faith and confidence as well in the secret service in the Milwaukee Police Department and other law enforcement agencies that are providing public safety here today. Going to be in this moment. I know you said you want to get President Biden re elected. It's going to be harder to get re elected. He's not making that case. I think that the president is showcasing leadership in this moment. Look what happened on Saturday was very big. It was a very big moment for the United States, right? There was an attempted assassination, not just the former president, but the presumptive nominee on the Republican side, one of the major parties in this country. And so President Joe Biden, because of the compassionate human being that he is, is working to make sure that we don't forget this moment and calling Americans to come together because really at the end of the day, we're all a part of the same American family that being said there is a political contest that's happening right now. And although the president may not be engaging in political activity in this specific moment in light of what's happened, I've got no doubt that those things will continue. Obviously, the Democratic National Convention will take place in Chicago next month and the president will have the opportunity to showcase the difference between his policies, what he's done, what he intends to do for the United States and his people in the future. And I'm looking forward to going to Chicago as a delegate to the DNC supporting President Joe Biden for renomination and then seeing it through in November that he wins, not just in Milwaukee, but in Wisconsin and re election as president of the United States, the media reconsideration of the weapons policy, obviously, your hands are kind of tied the state law and then you support that call. I mean, look, I've said that nausea as the mayor of the city, as the leader of the city, that there are far too many people, too many people who have access to deadly weapons, who should not have access to deadly weapons, right? It's far too easy to access those guns for people who should not have them. I mean, I think about, you know, some felons, domestic abusers, people with long criminal histories. When people have access to those weapons, they use those weapons then to commit death or harm or destruction in neighborhoods across Milwaukee across Wisconsin and obviously elsewhere in the United States as well. So if there is an opportunity if there were an opportunity for us to be able to restrict access to those weapons especially in an event like this, I would have loved to see something like that. However, and as you indicate, state law supersedes local ordinances. So we can't even pass anything that would prohibit the use or the access of those guns in this soft security perimeter that we have in the city of Milwaukee. So would I like to see that? Yes, but unfortunately, state law has supremacy here in Wisconsin. Last question. Hey, mayor, uh you mentioned two relatively minor uh public safety incidents around the RNC last night. How overall, how do you judge and evaluate, you know, whether public safety for the event would not say the last part? Again, how would you just evaluate whether or not the public safety approach for the event is as uh uh a again, I think that uh the secret service, the Maui Police Department, you know, other law enforcement agencies have worked diligently on public safety planning relative to the RNC, the Moe Police Department. And the police chief, Jeffrey Norman has talked about the goal of law enforcement here as much as they can be. I mean, obviously they're very visible but it's to be invisible. It's to not have to interact with folks who are participating in this convention one way or another. So my desire will be for people to make sure that they attend the event that they're peaceful that they take into account, not just their own rights, but the rights of other individuals who are themselves and their political views here and not have interactions with law enforcement, resulting in arrests or things like that. I think those are things that help us to get to success. Now, I mentioned some of the things last night where there were some arrests, some individuals had a drink or two too much.
