A large mass of hot and humid air will stretch Tuesday from the Mid-Atlantic states and the Carolina coast to the middle part of the Mississippi Valley. This July-like air will be ushered in by a Bermuda high-pressure system extending well to the west. Few thunderstorms are expected across this area, but rain will develop on the outer edges of the air mass.

An area of tropical moisture, including Tropical Storm Gordon, will affect Florida to the Texas Coast. The tropical storm is expected to make landfall in the middle of the upper Gulf Coast later Tuesday and Tuesday night but could shift its track slightly farther to the east or west. The risk of flooding and strong gusts will be greatest near and east of the storm center as it makes landfall.

The southern and central Plains to the Upper Midwest and the central Great Lakes area can expect showers and thunderstorms. Enough rain may fall to aggravate flooding.

A mass of slightly cooler and less humid air will settle over northern New England.

Much of the West can expect another dry and sunny day. Cooler air will advance over the northern Rockies while seasonable temperatures prevail in the rest of the region.

FOCUS: Flooding Rain In the Plains, Heat In the East

A cold front sweeping through the northern Plains will bring possible flooding rain and thunderstorms from eastern Nebraska to northern Wisconsin. Heat and humidity will continue to surge into the East, with high pressure over the East Coast.
