Heat and humidity will extend Tuesday from the South to the Great Lakes and the Northeast. Temperatures in many areas will rise into the 90s, and high humidity will make it feel much hotter. While there will be little in the way of cooling thunderstorms in the Northeast, spotty storms are expected to occur in the Deep South, mainly in the afternoon.

The steamy conditions will allow severe weather to develop as a cold front moves from Michigan to northern Missouri in the afternoon and into the night. The strongest storms may produce damaging winds and flooding. In the wake of the thunderstorms, cooler air will expand across more of the northern and central Plains. The southern Plains will continue to be hot.

Temperatures will rebound across the northern Rockies, following the rain and high-elevation snow that started the week.

The Pacific Northwest will turn very warm as dry weather prevails across not only that region but also the Southwest. Temperatures in the Southwest should be seasonable.

FOCUS: Gusty Storms Move Toward The East

Thunderstorms will shift into the eastern Midwest and the Ohio Valley on Wednesday. Detroit; Columbus, Ohio; and Louisville, Kentucky, will be at risk for gusty downpours. This may result in some travel disruptions during the evening commute.
