Another dry day is in store for the West on Sunday, although the intense heat will be held in check from Northern California to Washington. Little moisture is expected for the fire-ravaged areas of California and Nevada. This week, high pressure will become re-established over the region and escalate the heat.

Hot, dry weather is expected across much of the central and southern Plains with sunshine and highs mainly in the 90s. A few thunderstorms will pop up in the central and northern Rockies later in the day. A few strong thunderstorms are expected from northeastern Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota to northern Wisconsin ahead of a weak cold front.

Drying will continue in the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast on Monday after a period of excessive rain and flooding. Temperatures will be well into the 80s to near 90 from Maine to Virginia. It will also be quite warm and humid across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley with more sun than clouds.

Seasonably hot, humid weather will cover the Southeast and the Gulf Coast states with sun and clouds and a few widely separated showers and thunderstorms, primarily during the afternoon and evening hours.

FOCUS: Heat to Build in East

After weeks of rainfall, the Northeast will finally dry out and warm up early this week. High temperatures will return to the 90s along the Interstate 95 corridor. Factoring in some sunshine and humidity, it may feel like the triple digits, especially in the urban areas.
