Even though the recent heat wave has already peaked in much of the Northeast and Midwest, another hot and humid day is in the forecast for much of the region. Cooler and less humid air will continue to move southeast across the north-central states. Temperatures will fall 10 to 15 degrees as the cool air arrives. Showers and heavy thunderstorms are expected ahead of the air mass, from the Great Lakes and the Northeast to the central Plains.

Hot and humid air is expected to linger over the South. Moisture from the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico will fuel showers and thunderstorms. As the storms move west along the upper Gulf Coast and into the Big Bend area of Texas, flooding downpours may occur.

Much of the West will be sunny. Spotty thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon and evening over the central and southern Rockies. Low clouds will dissipate quickly along the Pacific Coast. Heat is projected to build substantially over the Southwest, with temperatures in many spots projected to exceed 100 degrees on Friday.

An area of disturbed weather west of Bermuda may become a tropical depression over the next few days. The system is expected to stay offshore.

FOCUS: Weather Pattern Next Week

Very warm air will cover much of the United States next week as the jet stream shifts north across southern Canada. Thunderstorms will persist along the Gulf Coast and the southern Rockies. The Midwest should be mainly dry.
