Hot and humid air will linger Friday over the South-Central states and is expected to build east and north. The heat will run into resistance over the Midwest, where heavy rain and thunderstorms will occur. Some areas may experience repeated downpours, resulting in flash flooding. A few gusty storms will develop on the southern edge of the persistent rain. The wet, unsettled conditions will expand across the central Appalachians and parts of the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop in Florida and parts of the southeast coast as a weak storm system moves slowly across the area.

Severe thunderstorms will occur from Nebraska to the Dakotas. These storms may bring large hail, high winds and flooding.

In the West, many areas can expect another dry and sunny day, with high pressure near the Four Corners. Spotty storms will affect the northern Rockies. As a major storm pushes ashore in British Columbia, much cooler air and rain will move into coastal Washington and Oregon. The storm will bring mountain snow and severe weather to the Canada Prairies this weekend.

Focus: Possible Severe Thunderstorms on Sunday

A strong cold front is expected to produce intense thunderstorms from the northern High Plains through Saskatchewan on Sunday afternoon. The strongest storms may bring damaging winds, large hail and even tornadoes.
