As Alberto continues north, seas will build across the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and downpours will invade more of the Florida Peninsula on Saturday. Alberto is expected to further strengthen before making landfall along the upper Gulf Coast around Memorial Day with flooding rain, strong winds, storm-surge flooding and isolated tornadoes. The rest of the South will experience a resurgence of downpours Sunday into Monday.

Away from Alberto, steamy air will surge from the South to the Great Lakes and Northeast on Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms will occur over many communities across these regions. A cold front will also help touch off some storms in the Northeast and will bring cooler air into northern New England.

High pressure building across the Plains will send temperatures soaring 15 to 25 degrees above normal. Record highs will be in jeopardy.

The heat will occur ahead of the storm, delivering showers and thunderstorms around Nevada to the northern Rockies. It will be a cooler day around Idaho and Nevada. Gusty winds to the south will increase the fire danger in the Desert Southwest. The West Coast will be dry as clouds give way to some sunshine.

Focus: Alberto Impacts

Rain and heavy thunderstorms associated with Alberto are expected to spread north through the eastern half of the Gulf Coast region and up into the Southeast later this weekend. Significant flooding may occur from Southern Mississippi to South Carolina.
