High pressure Monday will provide widespread dry weather and low humidity across the Northeast, providing relief for areas between Washington and Philadelphia that have recently been affected by heavy rain. Still, minor to moderate flooding is expected to continue along the Potomac River.

Showers and thunderstorms will stretch from the Midwest to the southern Middle Atlantic and South. Thunderstorms are also projected to develop across Texas and into New Mexico and Colorado. There may be pockets of steadier rain, and a few of the storms could produce gusty winds.

Warmer air will move across the northern Plains and northern Rockies. This warming will occur ahead of showers and thunderstorms returning to the Intermountain West, especially in the afternoon.

Gusty winds south of the storm will increase the risk of wildfires in the Desert Southwest.

The West Coast will remain dry as morning low clouds give way to sunshine along the California coast. Temperatures will rise a few degrees above normal in the Pacific Northwest, with further warming expected through midweek.

Focus: Showers and Thunderstorms in the Southeast

Heavy rain will continue to affect the Southeast and eastern Gulf Coasts on Monday and Tuesday. Showers and thunderstorms, a few of them heavy, will develop as a persistent flow of humid, tropical air moves into the region.
