Rain is expected to spread on Friday from the Mid-Atlantic to New England. A small storm will move quickly through the region. Some rain will also extend west into parts of the central Appalachians. Thunderstorms may occur near the lower Mid-Atlantic Coast and ahead of a front in Central and South Florida. Some sunshine will return to the interior Southeast.

Farther west, a mass of chilly air is projected to push south across the Great Lakes. Spotty showers and thunderstorms will develop along the leading edge of the air mass. Spotty storms are also expected farther south, around the Mississippi Delta. The cool air will expand into the Northeast on Saturday, which may result in spotty thunderstorms and hail.

Areas from the Plains to the Rockies and the Southwest can expect dry weather and sunshine. High pressure will settle across the southern Plains while a cool front drops south over the northern Plains. Most of the Rockies and the deserts will remain warm.

Much cooler air is expected to expand from Oregon to Washington, Northern California and western Nevada. Clouds and showers will accompany the cool air, which will bring an end to the recent spell of record-challenging warmth.

Focus: Summerlike Warmth Next Week

A major warmup is in the forecast for the Midwest and Northeast next week as high pressure moves off the East Coast. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the 70s and 80s across the region. A few spots in Virginia may even see highs of 90.
