Blustery and cold conditions are expected from the Great Lakes to the Northeast on Tuesday. As a storm lifts slowly north into Canada, a counterclockwise flow of air around the storm will bring cold rain showers along the coast from the Mid-Atlantic to New England with rain and snow showers farther inland. The ground may be covered by snow in some areas.

Farther south and west, sunshine is forecast from the Southeast to the Mississippi Valley and southern Plains. A zone of high pressure will create the dry conditions. The sunshine will help to melt some of the snow over the northern Plains.

Meanwhile, the most recent storm from the Pacific Ocean will continue to push across the West. Rain and mountain snow will fall from the upper part of the Great Basin to the central and northern Rockies and northern High Plains. Locally heavy snow will fall on parts of northern Utah, Wyoming and southern Montana. Snow will spread across part of the Upper Midwest during the middle of the week and then a portion of the Northeast on Thursday. South of the storm track, strong wind gusts, dry conditions and surging warmth will result in an elevated risk of wildfires over the southern Rockies and southern High Plains. More rain will fall on coastal areas of the Northwest.

FOCUS: Rain and Wet Snow Thursday

A weak storm is expected to produce rain and snow across the interior Northeast on Thursday. There may be a small accumulation above 1,500 feet, but roads should remain wet. Precipitation will be mostly rain along the Interstate 95 corridor.
