Lingering moisture from a storm that affected the Midwest over the weekend will produce some rain and snow showers in New England on Tuesday. Showers and thunderstorms are also expected from the Carolina coast to the northeastern Gulf Coast, including much of Florida. A few of the storms may be heavy and gusty. The rain will help alleviate drought and wildfire conditions in the region.

Clouds and showers will extend west across the Gulf of Mexico to parts of South Texas. The moisture will arrive on the tail end of a front that is projected to slow, stall and eventually fizzle out.

Most areas from the Middle Atlantic and the Midwest to the Plains and the Southwest can expect a dry day, with at least some sunshine. As chilly air lingers in the Northeast and Midwest, warmth should build over the Plains.

In the Northwest, the first in a series of storms will move ashore from the Pacific Ocean. Rain and gusty winds will spread inland across Washington, Oregon and Northern California. Lighter rain showers are in store east of the Cascades. Snow will generally remain above the passes in the Cascades and the northern Sierra Nevada until Wednesday.

FOCUS: Potential Late-Week Snowstorms

The same storm system that is expected to produce severe thunderstorms in the South and Midwest may bring heavy snow and strong winds to the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest on Friday. The heaviest snow will fall from Montana to northern Minnesota.
