Dry weather and some sunshine are expected Tuesday for much of the East Coast, with high pressure extending south from Maine. Spotty showers will affect South Florida.

Clouds will thicken over parts of the central Appalachians, followed by chilly rain and drizzle. Expect soaking rain from the central Great Lakes to north-central Texas. Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop just ahead of the rain, from the lower Ohio Valley to the central Rio Grande Valley. Some of the storms may produce large hail, high winds and flooding rain. Flooding may escalate from small streams to larger rivers as downpours continue through midweek.

Most areas from the northern Plains to Arizona and California can expect a dry day, with sunshine. A weak storm system will bring rain and snow from parts of New Mexico to Colorado. Most of the accumulating snow will be confined to the Colorado Rockies and foothills in the morning. As moisture from the Pacific surges east, drenching rain will develop over Western Washington along with lighter showers in northwestern Oregon and parts of northern Idaho and Montana. Snow will affect the high country of the northern Cascades.

Focus: Possible Severe Thunderstorms

The leading edge of a cooler air mass is expected to bring severe thunderstorms to Texas later Tuesday and into Tuesday night. The storms may produce damaging winds and hail, affecting Dallas in the late afternoon and Austin, Texas, at night.
