A warm and humid day is in store for the Southeast on Monday, with periodic rain affecting areas from the central Gulf Coast to Virginia. Rain may interrupt Mardi Gras celebrations in the morning in New Orleans. Thunderstorms and the heaviest rain will occur in parts of southern Georgia and northern Florida.

Some snow and sleet are expected in the mountains of West Virginia. Dry, cool and sunnier weather should return to the Northeast.

Cloudy and frigid weather is in store for the Midwest and the northern Plains. Warmth and sunshine will build in the central and southern Plains.

A wintry storm is projected to bring unsettled conditions to the Rockies, with snow throughout Nevada and much of Utah, Colorado and Wyoming.

The system will also provide breezy conditions across the Southwest and cool, damp conditions along the West Coast. Showers will stretch from Monterey Bay to San Diego. This could be the first measurable rainfall in the region since mudslide-triggering downpours fell in early January.

FOCUS: Showers in Southern California

Rain showers will break an abnormally long dry stretch in parts of California. Spotty, generally light rain, rather than a much-needed soaking, will affect the southern half of California. Heavy rain may dampen Arizona and western New Mexico midweek.
