BENSON, N.C. — The Johnston County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting death of a 2-year-old boy.

Deputies found Warren Bennett Oser with a gunshot wound near a car on the property when they responded after 6 p.m. Sunday to a home on West Watson Road.

Deputies said both parents were at the scene. There were no other reported injuries.

Detectives discovered that Oser had climbed into his dad’s pickup truck through an open door, and was playing with a loaded handgun that was inside the vehicle. The sheriff's office said Oser was able to discharge the weapon, which resulted in injuries to himself.

Authorities took the child to Johnston Medical Center Clayton, where he died from his injuries. The death investigation is considered to be an unfortunate accident at this time. No one is facing charges as of Monday morning, but the investigation is ongoing.

The sheriff's office said it would submit its report to the district attorney, who could choose to file charges in Oser's death.

On Monday, WRAL News reached out to Johnston County District Attorney Susan Doyle. She said if the sheriff's office, in its report, finds any criminal statutes were broken, she will bring charges in Oser's death.

Johnston County Sheriff's Office Lt. Donald Pate discussed the importance of proper gun storage.

"[I'd] advise you to keep your guns stored separate from ammunition," Pate said.

The sheriff's office provided the following tips on how to properly store guns:

  • Keep gun and ammunition separate
  • Use gun lock on pistol
  • Store gun in safe or lockbox

On Monday, the family was gathered at the home to support the parents, Emily and Tyler. Several family members were in tears as they spoke with WRAL News.

Community members are trying to raise money for the parents through a GoFundMe.

“We’re having to raise money for a funeral we never expected, for a 2-year-old,” one family member told WRAL News.
