MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — Wayne County deputies have arrested a suspect in the death of a man assaulted early Saturday.

Deputies investigating reports of an assault found the body of Edwin Alexander Sura-Cruz, 32, at 598 Waller Road, outside Mount Olive, around 2 a.m., said Maj. Tom Effler, with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said they believe Sura-Cruz was killed by an acquaintance, Carlos Antonio Bran Calderon, 23, of 103 Timothy St. in Dudley.

Calderon fled the scene on foot, and K-9 units followed his track until it ended at a road, Effler said. He was captured around 10:30 a.m. after a resident called 911 to report a suspicious person walking near woods off Waller Road.

Calderon was charged with one count of murder and placed in the Wayne County Detention Center without bond.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of Sura-Cruz's death.
