Celebrate the watermelon at Watermelon Day at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh on Thursday.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., check out the largest watermelon contest ($1,500 in prizes!), try some watermelon and get some watermelon recipes. I'm not sure there's really time to start growing your watermelon now, but if you want to learn more about the contest, click here.
As I've said before, these events at the farmers market are low-key events that will keep the kids busy.
How do you pick a good watermelon?
This is how, according to the N.C. Watermelon Association:
"Choose a watermelon symmetrical in shape without dents, bruises and cuts. Thump, if you must (listen for dull hollow sound). Turn watermelon over. The underside should be creamy yellow with a healthy sheen to the rind."
The association also offers some recipes on its website.
