SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A concerned viewer reached out to WRAL News after seeing water overflowing from the Smithfield water tower early Saturday morning.

The water had frozen almost instantly on the tower and the gate surrounding it.

A worker told WRAL News that it is normal for the water tower to overflow when it fills up.

Near the water tower on U.S. Route 70, the road was slick. If you're planning on driving today, you may want to avoid the area.

Smithfield was around 20 degrees on Saturday morning and a wind chill made it feel even cooler. Around three to four inches of snow fell in the area.
